Why Does Pride Matter?

Our friends at PFLAG – Georgetown asked the question at Georgetown’s Downtown Market Day on June 10th: Can anyone give a rational explanation for LGBTQ+ Pride Month? What is there to celebrate? While they received 57 individual responses, the most common words included were Be and Love.

Marty Cormier from the PFLAG Board of Directors summarized the responses: We celebrate Pride Month in honor of “Being” and “Loving.” Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, weddings, and passings all too are about Be and Love. From all of us, we hope to convey that we love who you are, who you’re being. And we hope that you love being yourself.
